Among the Allies participating in the Holy
Land campaign against the Turks during
World War I were a number of Italian troops.
The Italian soldiers were part of General
Allenby’s forces, but maintained their
own headquarters in Tel Aviv. After taking
part in the campaign which resulted in the
occupation of Jerusalem, they participated
in additional battles, particularly those
fought in September 1918.
Not having their own postal system, Italian
soldiers shared the British APO facilities;
however, they applied their own cachets and
markings to their correspondence.
