With the outbreak of the war, a small group of
Jewish Ottoman citizens joined the Turkish
army, a few of them serving as engineers,
doctors and interpreters. Among them was
Moshe Shertok (Sharett). Being fluent in
Turkish, German and Arabic, he served as a
translator on the Macedonian and Palestine
frontlines. Sharett would later become the
first Foreign Minister of the State of Israel
and its second Prime Minister.
