THEODOR HERZL – A SHORT BIOGRAPHY
May 2, 1860 - Theodor Herzl is born in Budapest.
February, 1878 - Moves to Vienna and enters Law School.
1884/5 - Practices law, becomes interested in journalism and playwriting.
October, 1891 - Appointed Paris Correspondent of Neue Freie Presse, most prominent Viennese daily.
January, 1895 - Dreyfuss Affair. Herzl deeply impressed, recognizes ambiguous position of the Jews.
February, 1896 - Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State) published in Vienna, the first statement of political Zionism.
August, 1897 - First Zionist Congress at Basel. Establishment of Zionist Organization.
October, 1898 - Herzl and party land at Jaffa. Tour Jewish colonies and have informal meeting with German Emperor.
May, 1901 - Formal audience with Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Herzl offers to pay off Turkish debts and is promised pro-Zionist proclamation.
October, 1902 - Received at Colonial Office; is told that British Government conditionally favors settlement in El Arish (Sinai).
August, 1903 - Brings the Uganda proposal before Sixth Congress, at Basel..
July 3, 1904 - Death of Theodor Herzl.
