Metulla was established, on 17 May 1896 on land purchased, at the initiative of Baron Rothschild, from a Christian Arab of Lebanon. Metula was inhabited by 59 families who arrived from various colonies supported by the Baron, particularly Rishon Le Zion and Zichron Ya’akov. Village life was very difficult and farmers of Metula faced poverty, deprivation, disease, and harsh living conditions.Despite all the difficulties, the Baron continued to support the colony. He appointed an agronomist as its director, had old cabins destroyed and replaced by new houses, and built the first main street in Metula. Over the years, especially after the War of Independence in 1948, the poor village has become an organized, modern, and beautiful colony.
