The postal service of "The Messengers Group" operated in Haifa in the first half of 1948. They were the inevitable result of the singular emergency conditions prevailing during the struggle for Israel's independence. Already at the beginning of 1948, there were many hostile incidents in Haifa, which had a considerable Arab population. The Arabs being, scattered between the Jewish Quarters, exploited this situation to disturb the Jewish population, especially by trying to prevent the regular communication between the quarters and by obstructing the daily commercial activity. Therefore, the Mandate Postal Services were already very inefficient in the first months of 1948; this was especially harmful to the Jewish population, both socially and economically. This gloomy situation urged a group of four people - Dr. Berginski, Yehuda Notes, Nisan Trachter and Shkedi - to organize at the end of January a "Cooperative Delivery Group" which they named "השליחים" ("The Messengers"), with the purpose of improving postal communication for the Jewish population in Haifa. During its brief existence (1.2-10.5.48) this local delivery service carried some 35,000 letters and parcels in Haifa. A partial list of its customers is: the Anglo-Palestine Bank, "Halva'ah veHissachon" Bank, the Histadrut HaKlalit, The Jewish Agency, "Migdal" Insurance Company, the Palestine Electric Corporation, the Local Council of Hadar HaCarmel, "Shemen Ltd.", The Technion, WIZO, the Workers Bank, and many other public institutes and private businesses and individuals.
